What to Look Out for When Having Botox for Blepharospasm

While Botox is quite popular for its cosmetic use in ironing out wrinkles and reducing the appearance of fine lines, Dr. Parley D. Fillmore and his team also use Botox in Las Cruces as a treatment for eyelid spasms, also known as blepharospasm.

More and more people are looking into using Botox to treat the uncontrollable and forceful blinking as it has been proven that it’s safe and effective. However, there are certain adverse effects to look out for if you happen to regularly receive Botox injections.

Botulism

While Botox is safe when injected in small amounts, too much of it could lead to botulism poisoning. Symptoms of botulism poisoning include the following:

  • trouble breathing and swallowing
  • double vision
  • blurred vision
  • sudden muscle weakness and loss of strength all over your body
  • loss of bladder control
  • change and/or hoarseness of voice

Keep in mind that these symptoms could occur hours, days or weeks after you receive your Botox injections.

Who Should Not Have Botox

You are not to receive Botox if you are:

  • you have a history of allergic reactions to products similar to Botox such as Xeomin, Myobloc and Dysport
  • you have skin infection or open wound at the planned injection site
  • you are currently treated for urinary incontinence
  • you are currently diagnosed with urinary tract infection (UTI)

What to Tell Your Doctor Before Having Botox

It is best to inform your doctor of the following information before having Botox:

  • you currently have a disease which affects your nerves and muscles
  • you have history of botulism occurrence
  • you have bleeding problems
  • you have emphysema, asthma, or other forms of breathing problems
  • you have pain or burning sensation whenever you urinate
